Paul Delvaux - Odyssée d’un Rêve

2012-2013

Organized in cooperation with the Fondation Paul Delvaux, this exhibition was adapted for Japanese audiences from the Paul Delvaux: Odyssée d’un rêve exhibition held at the Musée Paul Delvaux in Belgium. It was the first retrospective outside Belgium to include works from all phases of Paul Delvaux’s career, from the very earliest to the very last. "Odyssey" in the subtitle is a reference to the Greek epic poem, The Odyssey, which Delvaux admired greatly since boyhood. The Odyssey had a strong formative influence on the creative universe of Delvaux, whose entire life was devoted to an odyssey in pursuit of dreams, just like Odysseus, who found happiness after a peril-riddled journey.

Nearly half of the exhibited works were on view in Japan for the first time. In addition to oils, watercolors and drawings by Delvaux, exhibits included some of the artist’s treasured personal possessions, such as his model train and oil lamp, which shed light on his recurring motifs and guided viewers into the alluring, dazzling dream world he pursued.
