Women and Sports wear : An alternative history of 20th century

2006

Social changes in the early 20th century brought shifts in the status and roles of women, which in turn dramatically transformed women’s fashion. Sportswear and its concern for functionality significantly contributed to this transformation, which included the wearing of trousers by women, and the removal of corsets.

Composed of 100 exhibits including sportswear, sportswear-inspired resort and casual wear, and other items of clothing as well as photographs and prints showing how such outfits were developed and popularized, this exhibition provided an excellent opportunity for examining sportswear, fashion, and the bodies they are designed for.
